Yb:KGW

Yb:KGW(Ytterbium doped Potassium Gadolinium Tungstate) is a crystal used for diode or laser pumped solid state laser applications. It has very similar properties together with Yb:KYW where their gain bandwidth is much larger than that of Yb:YAG, allowing them to achieve wide wavelength tunability and very short pulse durations from mode-locked lasers. With passive mode locking, they are even able to achieve values below 100 femtoseconds. 


Yb:KGW also has relatively high emission cross sections compared to other Yb doped gain mediums. The high emission cross section is an essential component for getting passive mode locking, which also helps in preventing Q-switching instability. Tungstates can withstand high doping concentrations without significant quenching due to the ion radius and inter-ion distance, they also have greater thermal conductivity with the order 3-4W/(K m) than other 

laser crystals. The structure of Yb:KGW is monoclinic, allowing them to posses

natural birefringence, which helps to avoid thermally induced polarization rotation

and depolarization loss. Lastly, tungstates have high Raman coefficient, they can 

generate significant Raman gain at moderate optical intensity.


Yb:KGW and Yb:KYW have wide applications in the field, such as Raman 

converter, ultrashort pulse generator and amplifier, and also high power thin disk

lasers.
